Three arrested for robbing Ama Busia

Three more persons have been arrested for their alleged roles in the robbery attack at the residence of Madam Ama Brema Busia, a former member of the Council of State, at Alhaji Tabora in Accra.

Those arrested were a former houseboy of Madam Busia, Godsway Nutakor, 25, alias Papisco, unemployed and Bright Asamoah, alias Nana Yaw Asaase, 19, one of the accomplices in the robbery.

Also arrested was Christian Kwame Anyidoho, 25, who was said to have helped the two to escape to Nigeria after the robbery.

Addressing the media at a press conference, the Accra Regional Police Commander DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno said the suspects will soon be placed before the court.

He explained that the plot to attack the residence of his former employer had been hatched by one of his friends, Paul Afari, a 22-year-old carpenter.

Afari is now serving a 25-year jail term after the Accra Circuit Court had convicted him in connection with the robbery.

Nutakor, who wept uncontrollably while he was in handcuffs, claimed that he had committed the crime because of peer pressure.

He said he had told his friend that his former employer kept money in the house and that she was away mostly on Sundays.

Based on that information, Afari secretly got a mask and weapons for the operation and later convinced him (Nutakor) and Asamoah to “go for the money”.

Nutakor, in his confession, told the police and journalists present at the press conference how he and his friends undertook the robbery at the residence of the sister of the late Prime Minister, Dr Kofi Abrefa Busia.

He said they went to the house about 8:30 a.m. while she was attending church service at the Calvary Methodist Church at Adabraka in Accra.

The Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, told journalists that the robbery occurred on March 22, 2015 and the suspects made away with $35,500; 3,000 euros; £300 and GH¢25,000.

He said the suspects and their convicted accomplice had told three house helps in Madam Busia’s house that they had been contracted by her to re-roof the house.

“Without verifying the authenticity of the information, the house boy ignorantly opened the gate and allowed the three suspects into the house. Upon gaining access to the house, the suspects threatened the house helps with knives,” he said.

The suspected robbers were said to have blindfolded the house helps before breaking into a metal safe in Madam Busia’s bedroom.

After sharing the booty, Nutakor and Asamoah allegedly went into hiding in Nigeria after the arrest of Afari, who used part of his share to purchase a motorbike.

Nutakor used part of his share of the booty to buy two saloon cars.

The two cars and the motorbike have all been retrieved by the police.

He said Nutakor and Asamoah went into hiding in Nigeria through the help of Anyidoho and came back to hide at Hohoe on realising that Interpol was after them.

Mr Yohuno said investigations indicated that they had given $5,000 and 3,000 Naira from the booty to a woman who Nutakor claimed to be his mother for safe keeping.
