Ghana Gas: ‘missing’ helicopters with military

In a statement, it said the military have the expertise and hangars to operate and maintain the helicopters, adding that the helicopters are in good working condition.

“The helicopters are currently stationed at the Air Force Headquarters at Burma Camp. Ghana Gas does not have the expertise and hangars to operate and maintain the helicopters,” Ghana Gas said.

“The helicopters are in good working condition and not ‘broken down’ as erroneously reported. It is worth noting that, there is a helipad at the Atuabo Main Camp,” it said.

Ghana Gas also denied media reports that seven helicopters were bought for the surveillance services, clarifying four helicopters were bought from China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) in 2015.

"Four (4) helicopters in total, not seven (7) as reported by some media outlets, were acquired. The said helicopters were procured from China National Aero Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC). The contract to that effect was signed on 21st December, 2017. The helicopters are currently stationed at the Air Force Headquarters at Burma Camp."

The co-chair of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr. Steve Manteaw who is also a member of the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) first raised the alarm after he claimed a source at Ghana Gas told him they could not trace the helicopters.

The report of the missing helicopters has also been dismissed by the former deputy Minister for Power John Jinapor as  strange and unfortunate.

“We procured four helicopters and they were commissioned by John Mahama in public. Ghana Gas does not have the pilots and expertise to fly the helicopters…the helicopters are not supposed to be parked at Atuabo…the Ghana Armed Forces was asked to manage the helicopters,” he said.

Mr. Jinapor told host Francis Abban “the helicopters are not missing…before I left office, the helicopters were in good shape and were working…the management saying they do not know about the procurement of the helicopters is surprising.”
