A self-styled Togolese doctor, Korkuvi Agbetorglo, 62, is being interrogated by the authorities of the Akatsi North District of the Volta Region operating an illegal abortion clinic called Kyire Eleson Clinic.

The District Security Committee [DISEC] entered the clinic premises behind the Ave-Hevi market and closed it down.

The clinic, in a partially completed apartment within his compound, was unkempt.

A search at the premises revealed several empty bottles of used drugs and discarded syringes, two beds, a table and a chair, which were evidence of clinical activity in the “ward.”

‘Dr.’ Agbetorglo, who is a cattle rancher, and popularly known in the area as a veterinary officer, denied running an abortion clinic.

He said documents licensing the clinic to operate were taken away some five years ago by some Italians who wanted to assist with the development of the place.
“I only treat Okada boys (commercial motorbike operators) injured in accidents and other minor ailments,” he said

Mary Darko, 55, who was at the clinic at the time of the operation, said she was a maid of Agbetorglo.

The clinic has been running for six years and Agbetorglo had once worked as a medical assistant at a clinic at Tangita, in the Republic of Benin.

In a similar operation, another clinic, the ‘New Light Clinic’, found to have started operations without license also at Ave-Hevi, has been closed down.

The Nigerian Physician Assistant in charge, name withheld, is helping the authorities with their investigations.

Health officials in the area hinted that they found samples of the drugs prescribed for the clients of the clinic to be sub-standard.

Mr. James Gunu, DCE of the area and  DISEC Chairman, who led the operation,  said  all what  DISEC wanted, was  for all businesses to get the required certification for their operations.

He said the other clinic was well, kept but needed the required papers to operate.
