The Ghana Police Service has issued a stern warning to heavily built men that they will be made to face the full rigour of the law if they allow themselves to used by political parties to cause trouble.

As Election Day approaches, the police administration has adopted strategies to deal with potential troublemakers before, during and after the 2016 election.

The Director General of Operations of the Ghana Police, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno in an interaction a group of heavily built men, aka macho men, warned them against interfering in the electoral process.

He said: “We met all the leadership of the political parties at a forum in Ada, and they all signed a communique saying that they are not going to give any backing to any vigilante group.

"We have denounced the use of vigilante groups. If you are following them to cause trouble, it means that whatever problem you create, you will face it.”

“The Attorney General has made it clear that activities of vigilante groups are illegal; so don’t give yourself out to any politician to misuse you.

"When you get yourself into trouble; the laws will deal with you, so send this message to all your people, and tell them that the Police and other security services will not sit down for any vigilante group to cause trouble in this country.”

Security experts have urged the police to be tough on potential troubles makers following the identification of over 5000 potential areas of conflict on Election Day by the National Security.

Meanwhile, the police have formed Counter Terrorist Unit to deal with any quasi-military groups.

Director of the Unit Adofiem Raymond Wejong said that vigilantes were supposed to be people who were vigilant, law abiding and to report any bad deeds to the Police to deal with.

“Anyone who commits any act of violence in the name of any political party or under any cover is a common criminal and we will deal with such individuals as common criminals and not as political vigilantes,” he said.

In addition, 365 police personnel drawn from the 10 regions have been trained to form an anti-violence advocacy group to combat violence and other crimes ahead of the December polls.

The training was aimed at preparing and toughening up the personnel to be able to deal with hardened criminals across the country.

Thirty personnel were drawn from each of the 11 Police Regions, including the Tema Region, and they were equipped with the requisite skills to make them more disciplined, firm, tough and fearless.
