The Communications Director of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Nana Yaa Jantuah has stated she is not aware of reports indicating that President Mahama has directed the commission to increase utility tariffs.

President John Mahama has reportedly asked the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) to increase utility tariffs in the country to help offset Ghana’s debt with Nigeria Gas.

The Managing Director of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company (WAPco), Walter Perez had earlier on told Citi FM, “It’s a tough decision for the President [Mahama] to make because ultimately it will mean that the consumer will have to pay more for power,… If he is not able to do that and the country is not able to do that then things really will fall apart.”

However, Nana Yaa Jantuah has said she is yet to receive an official directive from the president on the matter.

"We don't have any corresponding news to that effect. I don't know where the news is coming from. We don't respond to the President of WAGPO. The president has not directed us", she told Accra-based Starr Fm.

Backgroud

The Volta River Authority (VRA) owes WAPco 103 million dollars with the balance of 78 million dollars being owed to N-Gas and the other parties in the gas supply chain.

Since August 2014, VRA has received natural gas and pipeline related transportation services totaling 231 million dollars through WAPco but has paid only 50 million dollars of the amount.

VRA’s gas shipper N- Gas following pressures from the Nigeria National Petroleum Company a month ago formally notified WAPco to curtail gas supply to it until further notice.
