New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Juaben South in the Ashanti Region, has taken a legal action against the Attorney General, the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) over the deal with Karpowership to import emergency power plants.

The MP, Mark Assibey Yeboah, says the defendants failed to seek parliamentary approval before signing the deal with the Turkish company to bring two power barges to Ghana to mitigate against the power crisis.

Lawyer for the MP, Afenyo Markin, who is also an NPP legislator, says the suit was filed at the Supreme Court.

He said they are praying the court to determine the constitutionality or otherwise of the AG’s stance that the deal with the ECG must not receive parliamentary approval.

“He holds a view which to him requires a transaction of this nature to come to Parliament… we have come to the end of the road and we should not allow any business man to line his pocket with the tax payers’ money and should not allow Parliament to act with such negligence,” Markin told Accra-based Starr Fm.

“It is not being done in bad faith at all. We want the power crisis to be tackled but nobody should take Ghanaians for granted at all. That is our contention,” the lawmaker added.

The first power barge is expected in Ghana in September and the second in January 2016.
