Residents of Akosombo protest against high electricity tariffs

Some residents of Akosombo in the Eastern Region embarked on a demonstration to protest against high electricity bills.

The demonstrators said the problem of high tariffs started when the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) installed new meters for them.

According to them, the situation has also forced most of them to shut their businesses.

They said the bill is too much for consumption levels.

"We are not technical men but this issue started from 2014 when these new meters were being installed. We had experience from the payments that we made.

"The bills have huge amounts so we approached authorities to come and have a look at those things, but all the effort couldn’t materialise into anything positive. We later forwarded our letter to the Chief Executive of VRA, PURC [and the] Energy Minister, but still we did not hear anything. So we decided to embark on a demonstration today just to voice our predicament for our problem to be solved today," one of the demonstrators told Accra-based Class FM.
