The National Council of Tertiary Education NCTE will make an attempt to resolve the impasse between trainee teachers and their school authorities over issue on dismissal and referral from colleges.

Students from Wesley College in Kumasi yesterday staged a peaceful demonstration to show their displeasure over the dismissal of some of their mates who failed mathematics.

The students claim the University of Cape Coast which Wesley College is affiliated to is unjustifiably dismissing students who fail in a single subject contrary to the schools laid down rules.

The students refused to go to class and eat their meals as a way showing their anger.

“We have spoken with the students and I have actually scheduled a meeting with them.” Executive Secretary of the National Council of Tertiary Education Professor Mohammed Salifu told Citifm. “I also have a meeting with the principals of college of education.”

The meeting is to find common grounds for both parties whose concerns have been deemed legitimate by the council.

The council will also be meeting the professional board of the Institute of Education, University of Cape Coast.

“In principle either sides has a point but we need to get to a point where there is some understanding of each position.” Professor Salifu said.

He explained that withdrawal of students only takes place when a student fails two or more courses. But it appears people are being dismissed even for failing a course.
