I was once called 'Fuck-Lawrence' - Justice Yaw Apaw reveals to vetting committee

Justice Yaw Apau noted that he was given the name, Fuck-Muree by his senior and later dropped the Muree and added the “Fuck” to his Lawrence to make his English name complete.

One of the judges nominated for the Supreme Court, Justice Yaw Apaw on Tuesday told Parliament’s Vetting Committee that he was once called “Fuck-Lawrence.”

Justice Apaw who was the Sole Commissioner of the Judgement Debt Commission, revealed this to the Vetting Committee today.

He explained that his elder brother gave the name Lawrence in primary school saying, “it was that time, if you go to school you have to have an English name.”

He added that he used the name Fuck-Lawrence, at the training college also but dropped it when he went to the Law School.

Below is his narration of his name change to the Vetting Committee.

When I went to Prempeh College, there was a senior who came to me and asked me whether I had a guy name.

Then I said no, I came from a village to Kumasi and Kumasi to Bekwai then Prempeh College.

So he gave me a list of guy names for me to select one. So I went through then I selected Fuckmuree.

So all my friends were calling me fuckmuree, then later I said let me drop the Muree and add fuck to my Lawrence so I have a hyphenated Christian name.

So my name became Fuck-Lawrence Apaw from training college. And this name Fuck-Lawrence Apaw has been on all my certificates up to the Law school.

When I was in the Law school, I decided to change my name because I was not an English man, why should I bare an English name. So I was one of those die-hard traditionalist, local people who thought Fuck-Lawrence shouldn’t be my name.

I learnt that from Malcolm X, who said his missing African name was the X, so I also did away with the Fuck-Lawrence and took the name Yaw Apaw…and that is the shortest name on the bench.
