The contest for the Talensi seat in the upper East Region is becoming keener as Tuesday, July 7, the day for the by-election draws closer.

Eight political parties have been cleared to contest in the Talensi constituency by-election slated for July 7, 2015.

Various parliamentary candidates are working around the clock to brighten their chances of winning the seat. The parties have balloted for positions on the ballot paper and have started educating the constituents on how to locate their parliamentary candidates on the ballot paper.

Joseph Toatoba of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is at number 1, followed by Denis Atia Tambil of the Independent People’s Party (IPP). New Vision Party (NVP), No. 3; Benson Tongo Baba of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), No. 4; Dr. Michael Wombengo of the People’s National Convention (PNC), No. 5; Yaro Philip Bame-ezina of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), No. 6; United People’s Party (UPP), No. 7 and Thomas Duanab Wuni of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), No. 8.

At the final rallies of the various parties in Talensi, campaigning for the Tuesday by-election in Talensi came to a halt, Sunday July 5 as the two main parties, the ruling National Democratic Congress( NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) held their final rallies.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the dominant opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), the People's National Convention (PNC) and the Progressive People's Party (PPP) are ready with their candidates for the by-election slated for July 7, 2015.

NDC rally

President John Mahama has stated that the NDC is "expecting 20,000 votes from the electorate” during the Talensi parliamentary by-election.

According to the President, “Talensi is the thermometer and barometer we are using to send a strong signal to the other parties that come 2016 the NDC will win the general election convincingly.”

Addressing teeming supporters of the NDC at the Saint Theresa's Catholic Park at Tongo to campaign for NDC's parliamentary candidate, Mr B.T. Baba, President Mahama was optimistic that victory in 2016 would be so overwhelming for the party that "the New Patriotic Party(NPP) would not go to court again to contest the results".

NPP rally

he 2016 flagbearer of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia addressed the thousands of residents who gathered at the rally grounds.

Nana Addo said no single person within his party wants any harm to befall President John Mahama, with some 16 months to the holding of the 2016 general elections.

Nana Akufo-Addo said, “They did not want us to have this rally, but in the end we are having it. The Police said that because the President is here, he will not be safe if we have our rally. We want to tell the Police and Mr. President that there is nobody in the NPP who would want anything to happen to him,” Nana Addo said.

He continued, “We don’t want anything to happen to him. We want him to be safe and well so that next year in December, we can have the pleasure of voting him out of power. Then, he can spend four years watching what a party with the plan and the programme can do to bring prosperity and upliftment to the Ghanaian people.”

Nana Addo took the opportunity to introduce the NPP’s Parliamentary candidate, Thomas Duanab Wuni and urged the electorates to vote for him come July 7.
