Konongo Odumase to cave in due to illegal mining

Leaders in Konongo Odumase have complained that efforts to stop the menace have proved futile

There are fears that the Konongo Odumase municipality will soon cave in due to illegal mining activities.

Most residents have turned their homes into mining pits in search of raw gold and other precious minerals. Leaders in the community have complained that efforts to stop the menace have proved futile.

An opinion leader, Nana Asante speaking on Starr FM said the situation is worrying.

“In fact it is very disturbing. One day it might cave in and nobody knows what will happen. We have been advising them to stop mining in the houses because that is dangerous. You tell them during the day. In the night you can't go there because you are not secured. We are not secured at all”.

Nana Asante further bemoaned that security agencies in the area have not been up to the task to deal with the menace.

The Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandor, has however given a directive to security agencies that all those mining in their homes should be arrested.
