Judicial Service slams Delta Force attack on judiciary

The statement follows condemnation of the act by the Judges and Magistrates Association of Ghana and the Ghana Bar Association (GBA).

The Judicial Service has expressed rage at Thursday’s attack on the Kumasi Circuit Court by members of the vigilante group, Delta Force.

“This act of impunity is not only a grave affront to the independence and dignity of the judiciary, but also an attack on the rule of law and the administration of justice in a constitutional democracy,” it said in a statement.

It continued: “The Judiciary is the last bastion and bulwark for the defence and protection of the constitution and the rule of law. This barbaric incident is most regrettable and dents the image of the country which is seen as a beacon of democracy in Africa.”

The judges said at a news conference that their members are living in fear after the attack.

Justice Victor Ofoe, President of the Association called on the police to “arrest and bring to normalcy the situation for peace loving Ghanaians to go about their lawful duties.”

“Such acts are a threat and intimidation of the members of the judiciary. It should be most gratifying for us, and of course all Ghanaians, that all involved will be apprehended and dealt with according to law,” he said.
