Owners of the lands hosting structures for University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) at Sokode near Ho in the Volta Region, have threatened to demonstrate on Wednesday, November 18, over government's delay to compensate them for lands acquired for the university.

Government through an Executive Instrument (EI) compulsorily acquired the lands for the first public university in the region, which was established as an Act of Parliament in 2011.Despite completion of structures on the land this year, the land owners are yet to be compensated.

According to them, “The Regional Minister promised that the compensation owed the University of Health and Allied Sciences Land Owners Association, Volta Region, would be added to provisions in the 2016 National Budget. Recently, the 2016 National Budget statement was made public without any mention of the University of Health and Allied Sciences Land Owners Association’s compensation.”

The landowners further said that the delay in their compensation contravenes the provisions made in Article 20(2) of the 1992 Constitution which mandates prompt payments of compensation for compulsory acquisition of land by the state.

“We are compelled to demonstrate on Wednesday, November 18 at the university premises to make government and the general public aware of the unfair and illegal treatment of UHAS land owners, with regards to the compensation which we are constitutionally owed,” the group added.
