Obinim expected in court today over assault, fraud allegations

Bishop Obinim spent a second night in Police custody Wednesday after he turned himself in at the Tema Regional Police.

Bishop Daniel Obinim, Founder and General Overseer of the International God’s Way Church is expected to be court over allegations of assault and fraud.

The embattled pastor was sent from the Police Headquarters to a new place on Wednesday after his followers gathered at the Police head office in Accra demanding his release.

Lawyer for the embattled pastor, Atta Kyea said Bishop Daniel Obinim may go to court to demand bail for his client if the Police fails to grant them the request.

Obinim’s followers protested against the preacher’s arrest but the Police managed to disperse them with water cannons and batons.

Atta Akyea said he is not happy with the way his client is being treated.

"...You could see today he’s been at the front pages of the Ghanaian Times and the Daily Graphic as if the nation hasn’t got anything serious to discuss, as if they need this kind of pictures to overshadow the Montie FM issues and I’m embarrassed by it, I don’t think that the nation should stoop that low, we have more serious things to look at, not Obinim’s matters,” he told Class FM.

A video which has gone viral shows Bishop Obinim whipping the two teenagers in the full glare of his congregation and questioned why the jobless man got the girl pregnant.

After he meted out the punishment, Obinim ordered his junior pastors to remove their belts and also flog the two.

The Police Criminal investigation Department (CID) has begun investigating him for allegedly duping a businessman of GH¢11.6 million.
