Otumfuo appoints sister as new Asantehemaa

This follows the passing away of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II in November 2016 at the age of 111.

The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has appointed his 83-year-old elder sister, Nana Ama Konadu, as the new Asantehemaa.

An official announcement is expected from the Manyhia Palace soon with the needed processes associated with the enstoolment.

Nana Ama Konadu will be the 14th queen of the Asante kingdom.

Following the passing away of the Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, the Kokofuman Hemaa, Osagyefo Bayie, was made to act in the stead of the Queen Mother.

The Kokofuman Hemaa belongs to the Oyoko Clan who are the royals in Ashanti.

As Asante custom demands, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was expected to nominate a successor after the burial of the late Asantehemaa.

The successor will then be announced to the public in two weeks’ time.

The final funeral rites of the late Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem will then be organised in a year's time.

This will be done by the new Queen Mother and the Asantehene.

The late Asantehemaa passed away in November 2016 at the age of 111.

No person was seen on the streets between the hours of 7pm Thursday, January 19, and 4am Friday, January 20, 2017, in line with her burial.

Ahead of her burial, several shops in Adum, Kumasi central market as well as other vibrant market centres in Kumasi were all closed.
