Even Houston gets flooded – Moses Asaga

A heavy downpour on Tuesday has led to flooding in parts of Accra. The continuous downpour since 4am, has rendered many roads almost impassable and also caused heavy vehicular traffic.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Moses Asaga has remarked that the recurrent flooding of Accra does not mean the country is backward.

Reacting to complaints by panalists on the Citi Breakfast Show about government’s failure to solve the perennial floods, Mr. Asaga asserted that even Houston in Texas, gets flooded when it rains but that does not make the city backward.

“Having floods does not mean backwardness. Last year, I was in Houston and it was raining. I was really shocked…with all their very beautiful roads. As my taxi was moving, the road was flooded,” he said.

Although Mr. Asaga acknowledged that it “is not a complete measure” to compare Accra and Houston, he insisted that, “having floods does not necessarily mean backwardness.”

He maintained that, “in the US, every time we hear about floods, does not mean that those states that get those floods which are disasters are backward.”

Areas in the capital city which have been hit by the floods and vehicular traffic include Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Kaneshie, Dansoman as well as Spintex.  Reports suggest that the entrance of the Supreme Court is flooded due to leakages at the Appeals Court.
