Galamsey pit kills two pupils at Meretweso

 

The mining pit which is filled with water, serves as a source of water for residents of the town.

According to Accra-based TV3, the two,11-year old Hagar Afari and eight year-old Emmanuella Mensah met their untimely death after they had gone to the site around 4.30 pm on Thursday with others to fetch water for use.

Rescuers, at about 5.30 pm, managed to retrieve the bodies from the pit and were rushed to the Meretweso CHPS Compound where they were later confirmed dead.

Residents and pupils could not hold back their tears on Friday, as the two were buried.

Emmanuella was a class two pupil of St. Andrew School and the last and fifth child of Joseph Mensah, a carpenter and Afua Nipaa, a farmer.

Hagar was a class three pupil of Meretweso Basic School and a child of Afari Dominic, a lotto agent and Patience Poku, also a farmer.
