Ghanaian musicians have been encouraged to take advantage of digital marketing to generate more income from their music instead of giving out for free.
The Tigo Ghana Meets Naija Industry Seminar which was held at the Silverbird cinema, Accra Mall, saw over hundred industry players, legal advisors and other corporate bodies’ representatives.
The event organised by Empire Entertainment in collaboration with telecommunication giant, Tigo Ghana received a welcome address from Christabel Bandah, the C.E.O of Empire Entertainment. Hosted by DJ Commotion of Live FM, Rev. Coleman, a representative from the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), in a solidarity message emphasized the union’s support for the upcoming Ghana’s biggest music concert, Tigo Ghana Meets Naija.
Mr. Jesse Agyepong, the Head of Tigo Ghana Marketing and Diego Farias, from Millicom Africa (owners of Tigo Ghana) introduced the musicians to online music streaming; how it works and how musicians can benefit from it. Tunecore.com, one of the world’s renowned streaming platforms with over 45 music stores including iTunes, Amazon and Google Play, was recommended for Ghanaian musicians who want to generate more income and spread their music worldwide. The attendees went through the registration process and how to receive their royalties.
Deezer App, another popular music streaming app which has over 35 million songs worldwide was an alternative recommended for artistes who can’t access Tunecore.com due to its registration and country restrictions. The app which has over 20 Ghanaian musicians signed onto it including Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, MzVee, Eazzy, Vybrant Faya etc pays them for every streaming by its customers therefore, unregistered artistes were motivated to do so instead of releasing their songs on social media for free.
Legal practitioner, Lawyer Adele Acolatse, also advised musicians to take a proper scrutiny at management contracts and rights over music property before signing to avoid future conflicts.
The one day seminar also saw some performances from female rapper Eno, Dancehall artiste Luther and Hip-life artiste Nero X.
The 5th edition of Tigo Ghana Meets Naija will come off on May 23 at the Accra International Conference Centre. Nigeria’s Mavins crew will face Ghana’s triple S – Sarkodie, Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy to prove who worth the West African music crown.
