Music hype is an indispensable factor in promoting or making sure your music reaches your targeted audience. It creates great anticipation and gives listeners a cause to wait patiently for the upcoming track. Hyping music today has become easy, thanks to social media. When your song trends whether locally or internationally on Twitter, count yourself as one of the luckiest artistes in the world because it’s not that easy to trend.

Hype works better when two great talents collaborate on a track or remix the most imbibed track. But when the collaboration flops, the artiste(s) involved will definitely receive scourges from fans and critics.

From time immemorial, the Ghanaian music industry has recorded numerous collaborations that crossed the shores of the country while several others remained in the booths.

Last year, collaboration played a vital role in most Ghanaian artistes’ career especially Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, Stobebwoy, D-Black, Castro and Akoo Nana. Akoo Nana and D-Black’s careers almost died until their collaboration with ‘missing’ Castro brought them back into the game. Their hype really worked but others went wrong.

This year has also witnessed great collaborations which were really hyped on both air and social media. Some went well, others went bad.

From Sarkodie’s most hyped “New Guy” featuring Ace Hood to D-Black’s “Shaminogbo” featuring Stonebwoy, David Mawuli brings you ten (10) collaborative efforts that no matter the hype horribly flopped this year.

1. Sarkodie – New Guy feat. Ace Hood

“New Guy” featuring American rap artiste Antoine McColister aka Ace Hood is first on my list because it received the most hype on and off social media. It’s the biggest failed collaboration with an outsider this year. With the ultimate promo support from world renowned music streaming platform Deezer, Sarkodie was assured of a great hit but failed. The case is just simple; “New Guy” isn’t a commercial song. It didn’t meet the expectations of Ghanaians upon all the hype, thus, it flopped.

2. Shatta Wale – Ototo feat. Tinny

I was among the hypers for this particular track because I thought it was going to be a surprise track. After many weeks of tweeting, and sharing on Facebook and Instagram, Shatta Wale’s highly publicised single titled “Ototo” which features ‘Bardman’ Tinny yielded no positive result after its release. That’s too bad for a man like Shatta Wale!

3. Akoo Nana – Bambala feat. Harry Song & Kcee

Akoo Nana was lucky last year but not this year. In a bid to continue his successful collaboration streak, the “Mi Yadaw” hitman travelled all the way to Nigeria to grab two of the country’s hottest Afrobeats stars Kcee and Harry Song to work on a track titled "Bambala”. Upon all the hype and follow up trailer, “Bambala” has become something else.

4. Shatta Wale – Romantic feat. Patoranking

At least, this was a clear opportunity for the self-acclaimed Dancehall King to build a strong fan base in Nigeria but he failed. Stonebwoy remixed his hit single “Pull Up” with Patoranking and it received a continuous hit but Shatta Wale’s single titled “Romantic” featuring the Nigerian Dancehall star flopped.

5. Becca – Steady feat. Ice Prince

Becca is not new to the Nigerian music industry. Her biggest breakthrough into their industry was her collaboration with rapper M.I. The song titled “No Away” topped several charts in Nigeria but this time, she failed with her latest single with rapper Ice Prince. Considering Ice Prince’s influence and fan base in Ghana, “Steady” should have been an instant hit. The video for the song is currently doing well on Pulse Music Video Charts but doing badly on radio.

6. D-Black – Shigbogbo feat. Kwaw Kese

D-Black has failed to prove critics wrong with several collaborations with some top stars in the country. Apart from his biggest collaboration with Castro last year, D-Black hasn’t been in good form in his career this year. Upon all the hype, “Shigbogbo” which features rapper Kwaw Kese is another biggest flopped collaboration ever done by the Black Avenue Muzik boss.

7. Tinny – Badder Than Them (Remix) feat. Edem & Jupitar

‘Bard Man’ Tinny should have avoided this flopped collabo but he went ahead to do it. “Badder Than Them”, a song he recorded to slam and prove haters wrong didn’t work as planned but went ahead to remix it featuring Edem and Jupitar. Maybe, he thought the remix could give the track  more exposure because of Edem and Jupitar but it flopped.

8. Obrafour - Twe Ma Me feat. Lousika

When all thought Obrafour’s comeback was complete, he disappointed many with his collaboration with Lousika. Lousika, in fact, is out of the music scene and I strongly believe Obrafour, no matter his legacy, can’t bring her back. The song titled “Twe Ma Me” received an equal hype as his hit single “Pimpinaa” which features Bisa Kdei but to be frank, it horribly flopped.

9. Kwamz & Flava - Wo Nane No (Remix) feat. R2Bees

These guys from nowhere broke through the industry this year with their charts topping track “Wo Nane No” (Raise your legs). Remixing a top track with top artistes won’t put too much impact on it but Kwamz & Flava remixed the track featuring R2Bees. I surmise the remix was done with the hope that it would be a massive hit but NO! “Wo Nane No (Remix)” actually flopped. They should have left the original track to 'fly'.

10. D-Black – Shaminogbo feat Stonebwoy

As averred early, D-Black has had a bad year. His investment this year  yielded no fruits. Even the cover art for his track “Shaminogbo” was another topic of discussion. The Afrobeats song which features Stonebwoy was tipped by many promoters (including myself) to be D-Black’s greatest hit but flopped. D-Black needs a new promotional strategy.
