Underground or upcoming artistes are the foundation of every music industry because without them, no one will succeed the mainstream acts. Though, not every upcoming act can achieve music career success, there have been instances where their successful future were predicted by industry observers/expects. Such artistes include MzVee, Irene & Jane (Irene Logan and Efya), Wiyaala, Tuutulapato, Sarkodie, Nobel Nketsia, Kwaw Kese, Edem, etc.
MzVee, Wiyaala, Dark Suburb and Pappy Kojo were marked to shine last two years and truly, they succeeded. Each won an accolade at Ghana’s most prestigious VGMA this year.
The first half of this year hasn’t been very good for some of the newcomers since most of the mainstream acts have hacked or dominated the airwaves. But I can say, their stage craft and new releases have had fair impact on the industry. From Dancehall to Afro-pop, the industry has witness a couple of newcomers who are trying very hard to break through with their constant good releases and social media influence.

The likes of T-Phlow, 1Cedi, Shatta Rako, Delasi, Rashid Metal, Rapkillimist, Scata Bada, Bastero, Eye Judah and Church Why have done great job in the first half of 2015 but some of their colleagues’ performances stand out.

1. Tijani Pepe
Signed to Abraham Ohene-Djan’s OM Studio records, the former TV3 Mentor contestant kick started this year with a hot Hausa/Afro-pop banger titled “Puyaka”. The silky vocalist ‘exploded’ when he dropped the clear concept visual to the song in May. He has performed on numerous big stages including AJ Nelson's "Smooth Live Sessions" concert and the just ended Sallah Fest organised by multiple award winning group VVIP.
2. Rudebwoy Ranking

Bulldog’s Bullhaus Entertainment record label act, Rudebwoy, has established himself very especially this year. The Reggae/Dancehall genius garnered huge followers this year with hit singles such as “Forking Money Maker” and “Gun Dem”. His biggest moment was when he hopped on Pappy Kojo’s “Ay3 Late” beat. For the past two years, Rudebwoy has had good time in the industry but this year has been a success.
3. Strongman
You don’t need introduction anymore – Strongman is a household name in Ghana. The winner of the maiden edition of GH One TV’s reality show had his biggest moments this year with his back-to-back collaboration with BET Award winner Sarkodie. This year, Strongman, who is counted among the fastest Ghanaian rappers, dropped hits like “Two Wo Nan Ase” featuring Akeba, “Ghetto Youth” featuring Enam, and his latest “Tonight” featuring Sarkodie. He is currently signed to Mic Burnerz Family label. Hope he gets a VGMA nomination next year!
4. Koo Ntakra
The MTN Hitmaker Season 2 winner, Koo Ntakra, is currently making huge impact with his consistent hits this year. Though, the Akwapem rapper had a few controversial tracks amongst his latest singles, I believe it’s part of the game – call a shot and get a shot! He ended last year in a grand style when he dropped a hit track titled “Move Back” featuring Yaa Pono. Koo, who is signed to Powase Music label has to his credit good songs like “Me Gye Me Doe”, “Me Gyal” featuring Empra Amslim, “Edumfa” featuring F Amoah, controversial “Attention” and his latest “Odorkor Kaneshie”. The rapper is currently on “Akuaba” album tour in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

5. D-Sherif
After receiving series of threats from his former boss Shatta Wale, the Reggae musician parted ways with him and established his own movement called Platinum Mindz or PM Empire. He quickly caught the attention of the Shatta Movement Family and Reggae music lover across the country, and now, I can bet that he will shine next year if only he follows the trend closely. D-Sherif has matured his art and he has gained more love due to his humbleness and soft vocal. One of his biggest hit this year is “Lone Survivor”.
