Innovation in spinal surgery

Israeli leading spinal surgeons at Herzliya Medical Center now use a new, minimally invasive system for spinal fusion - ZIP ULTRA

What is spinal fusion?

Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure, used to joint two or more vertebrate and treat a wide range of spinal deformations and issues caused due to abnormal movement of the vertebrate. The procedure is commonly performed in the lumbar region, but may also be used to treat issues in the cervical and thoracic areas.

Spinal fusion is not necessarily the first recommended treatment, but is required in cases of neurological deficits or severe pain, after patient has showed no signs of responding to treatment methods that are more conservative. The conditions where spinal fusion is considered include disc herniation, degenerative disc disease, spinal tumour, spinal fractures, spondylosis, scoliosis and more.

The advantages of ZIP ULTRA

Traditionally, in spinal fusion procedures, bone, metal plates, or screws were used to create bridge between adjacent vertebrae. The ZIP ULTRA is an implant that was developed to substitute the use of screws and metal plates during the spinal fixation. The purpose of the implant is to reduce the load from the thoracolumbar discs. The implant has its own unique locking mechanism, removing the need in screws. The implant is also adjustable, so it can accommodate the needs of various patients.

Innovative and minimally invasive techniques in spinal surgery have a direct impact on the outcome of the procedure, as well as the duration of recovery and the patient comfort during rehabilitation. The ZIP ULTRA fusion system makes spinal fusion a significantly safer procedure with minimal risk of nerve damage. The surgery can be performed under local anaesthesia and be relatively quick with minimal pain.
