Nissan’s Innovation Will Stop Your Texting and Driving Habit

We don’t need to tell you that texting and driving is bad. You should already know how dangerous it is, and that it’s a myth that you can effectively multitask while driving.

(This is why so many people do it anyway, though.) But what we do need to tell you is that there’s new technology to save you from yourself.

Nissan developed a solution for texting and driving called the Signal Shield. It’s essentially a cage for your phone that blocks all electromagnetic signals, including cellular, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. By dropping your phone into the Signal Shield, you’ll prevent yourself from any tempting or distracting alerts, like, say, your bro asking you how that date went last night. (Here are some other terrible texting habits you should avoid.)

While Nissan has yet to roll out the Signal Shield, the prototype has been put into the armrest of a Nissan Juke, as you can see in the video below. It’s pretty noninvasive, so there shouldn’t be any complaints of the heavy hand of Nissan should the company introduce it to the market. If you’re so against the man trying to prevent you from killing yourself by texting and driving, simply don’t put your phone in the armrest.

“This is about delivering more control at the wheel, not less,” Alex Smith, managing director of Nissan Motor GB, said in a statement. “Some drivers are immune to the activity of their smartphone, but for those who struggle to ignore the beeps and pings, this concept provides a simple solution in this very ‘connected’ world we live in.”

The solution is so simple, in fact, that the technology was developed in the 19th century. The Nissan Signal Shield is essentially a Faraday cage, which Michael Faraday invented in 1836. Who would have known it could be used to block so much information?
