The United Stated (U.S) government will soon repatriate the $550 million Abacha loot, to Nigeria.

The West-African country has met major conditions laid down for the return of the loot.

This was revealed by Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami.

Speaking in an interview with Nigeria’s Sunday Vanguard, Malami said what is left is the completion of some major paperwork by the U.S.

“We have done our part by providing the necessary documents required by the U.S Department of Justice and proving that we did not appoint Nnanka Godson as our lawyer to trace and recover any money for the country,” Malami said.

“What is basically remaining is paperwork to be done internally by the U.S. We have also appointed a senior Nigerian official based in the U.S to be relating with them in order to facilitate the fund repatriation.”

In September this year a United States District Court presided over by Justice John D. Bates dismissed a suit by a Nigerian lawyer seeking to stop the repatriation of the loot. The lawyer argued that the money could only be sent back after his legal fees worth $320 million has been paid by the Nigerian government.

Bates, in dismissing Nnaka’s case, said he was not entitled to any such payment.

So far Switzerland has returned $723million in looted funds to Nigeria in the last 10 years.
