The government of Botswana has deported a controversial anti-gay preacher from the country.

Steven Anderson, from the United States, went to Botswana after his visa to South Africa was rejected.

On a radio station in the country, Anderson who runs the Faithful Word Baptist Church, said homosexuality is an abomination that should be punished by stoning and that the teenagers who become pregnant must be killed.

The Patriot, a Batswana news outlet reports that President Ian Khama ordered the arrest and deportation of the pastor after he called for the death of gays.

“He was picked up at the radio station. I said they should pick him up and show him out of the country” - Khama said.

The US Embassy in the country has distanced itself from statements uttered by the preacher who had been declared a prohibited immigrant by Botswana.

“We believe in the freedom of expression and religion and are totally against the persecution of gays and lesbians as they have equal rights like any other person. His views don’t conform to the policy of the US government,” deputy chief of mission Timothy Smith said.

Although, homosexuality is illegal in Botswana, just like in many other countries, the law is not enforced. The former president Festus Mogae banned the police from police from arresting gays during his ten year stay in office.

Botswana consistently ranks high in many widely accepted democratic indexes.
