We can't shut down 'abortion clinic' - Ghana Health Service

Hundreds of women in the Eastern Region are in serious danger following the discovery of a fake abortion clinic.

Dr. Samuel Agyeman Boateng, the Suhum Municipal health Director, said after his outfit had inspected the facility, it realised that the said facility both serves as a clinic and accommodation for the family members of the quack doctor.

“I can’t even say it is a house, it is a typical village house fenced with woods. It is not a health facility, it is a house where people live…not a facility that you will say, you are closing down,” Dr. Samuel Agyeman Boateng told Accra-based Starr FM.

Dr. Agyeman Boateng said the GHS has launched investigations into the matter.

The fake doctor, known as David, is currently on the run, but the GHS has assured all that it will track him to assist in investigations.

Background

According to Starr News, whose investigation led to the discovery, the clinic is based in the town of Suhum and serves hundreds of women in and around the town.

The clinic is run by what they describe as a quack doctor whose name was only given as David and is said to have been in operation for several years.

The journalist went undercover as the brother of a client, ‘the clinic’ is a mud house of two rooms with ‘Dr David’ gaining assistance from three other men.

Women spend at least four hours at the facility after going through ‘Dr David’s’ crude methods.

At least three women visit each other and their ages range between 14 and 30.

Analysis

Abortions are still very much frowned upon by the general public in Ghana. That is why perhaps many women fall prey to such quack doctors. But to say that such a “clinic” might not be closed down is quite unfortunate. With the suspect on the run, many would wonder what kind of danger he poses out there. The GHS must step up their game and nip these fake practices in the bud.
