Health delivery in Ghana is set to worsen as the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) also  prepare to embark on a strike action following that of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA).

The Ghana Medical Association is in the fifth day of a  strike action after negotiations with government over their salaries and  better conditions of service broke down last week. Just when government and the doctors both expressed readiness to compromise their stance in order to settle the impasse, leadership of GHOSPA  are threatening  a strike action with final decision to be taken today . The pharmacists are agitating over what they label as ‘ discrepancies’ in the Single Spine Pay Policy.

GHOSPA’s decision comes in the wake of  a meeting with The Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah on July 31 2015 over their plans to strike. The meeting was  seen as a last minute intervention by government to prevent the strike, which will bring health care delivery in the country to a halt following a strike by doctors.

Speaking to the media,  Vice Chairman of GHOSPA, Kwabena Agyemang  Badu said the meeting was going to determine their next line of action, which will be concluded at meeting of the leadership of the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) this afternoon.

“After the meeting we will be in a better position to tell our members whether to strike or not. But we are just looking at issues which date back to four years ago where we started our strike, but it is principally about our base structure and single spine market premium,” he added.

Kwabena Agyemang Badu further  stated “It is regrettable that since 8th August 2014 when the Chief of Staff directed the Ministry of Finance to implement the road map for resolving the salary grievances of pharmacists in the public sector, following a Sub Cabinet Committee report. However the Finance Ministry has demonstrated a clear unwillingness to carry out the directive,” a statement from GHOSPA added.
