Graduate nurses arrested for picketing at Flagstaff House

The nurses, numbering 15, were arrested on Monday, January 11, 2016, after they refused to heed to police calls to evacuate from the venue of protest.
 
 

Some unemployed graduate nurses have been arrested by the police for picketing close to the Flagstaff House.

According to the aggrieved nurses, they have not been posted since 2014 after they graduated from their various colleges of education.

But, the Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command ASP Afia Tenge said the nurses breached the Public Order Act by not getting clearance from the police before embarking on the protest.

She said the police "advised them to disperse because the manner in which they had gathered there and for the reason which they had gathered was unlawful. After an hour, it looks as if they were adamant.

"Once we had warned them earlier to disperse and they refused, I think the police did no wrong in addressing those who were there, she added.

Meanwhile, 14 teachers have also been picked up for joining the nurses to picket close to the Flagstaff House.
