Damongo Hospital closed down temporarily

The hospital closed down after the youth in the area attacked and injured staff of the facility on a number of occasions.

Patients who are receiving treatment at the hospital have been prematurely discharged or referred to other facilities.

The Damongo district hospital provides health care for over 1,500 residents in the West Gonja district. It also serves as a referral facility for people in the Gonja North district.

Sources narrate that management of the hospital took this decision on Sunday (August 14) after some youth of the area attacked and injured some nurses who were on duty at the hospital.

The staff of the hospital is reported to have lodged a complaint at the Police station after they started recording theft cases at the facility.

Subsequently, some youth of the area invaded the facility and took away two motorbikes belonging to the staff.

The Police were informed again and the suspected culprits were arrested but later granted bail.

The youth who were angry over the arrest allegedly threatened the staff of the hospital and threatened to attack them and steal more items from the facility.

On Sunday morning, a motorbike belonging to a nurse went missing at the premises and two nurses were attacked and beaten brutally in the evening. This caused anger among the staff of the hospital who laid their tools citing insecurity as the main reason.

District Health Director of West Gonja, Hajia Fuseina who confirmed the incident said management would hold an emergency meeting on today (Monday) with the Chiefs and the youth in the area over the matter.

She indicated that the facility could be closed down permanently if the chiefs do not intervene.

The only Unit still in operation is the maternity ward where only women in labour are being admitted.
