Grandma, grandchild killed in Lagos cult wars

A unfortunate woman and her grand child were cut down in a cross fire between rival cult groups in Lagos.

Cultism is gaining momentum in the country

The spate of cult clashes in different parts of Lagos State has claimed the lives of 57-year-old woman, Victoria Osayemi, as well as that of her one-year-old grand son that was on her back, after a stray bullet hit the baby, piercing through her to also hit the woman on the head, killing them both on the spot.

The sad incident happened along Ishawo Road, Ikorodu, when two rival gangs were engaging themselves in a supremacy war, creating confusion and using dangerous weapons. The late woman was said to be on her way home from a market inside a tricycle when the unfortunate incident took place on Tuesday, June 23, 2015.

The driver of the tricycle, Awoyemi Olaoluwa, reported that the single bullet pierced through the tricycle and hit the Osayemi and her grand child inside, while the other two passengers escaped unhurt.

Olaoluwa said:

“I had picked Mama at Total bus stop. She was my second passenger and she was backing the child. I later picked another passenger along the road and she moved to the middle.

I was heading towards the Agric bus stop along Ishawo Road. But when we got to Mechanic Village bus stop, I started hearing gunshots.

My passengers asked me to hurry because there was a fight in the area. I was told the cultists were on motorcycles and were chasing and shooting at one another.

We had not moved too far when I saw that the woman’s head was bowed and resting on my back seat.

The other passengers who realised what had happened, raised the alarm, asking me to stop. That was when I knew Mama and the child had been hit by a stray bullet.”
