Nothing says 'I love you' like a proposal complete with the perfect diamond ring.

But it seems that modern would-be brides are so desperate to bag their dream engagement ring they are chipping in to the cost themselves.

According to a survey, a third of women are so determined to get the perfect ring they would go to any lengths to get it.

As well as coughing up the cash themselves, begging and pleading with their fiance until they give in is another tactic women will employ in getting their hands on the perfect 'rock'.

One in five promised not to have a big, expensive wedding if they were presented with the perfect diamond ring.

The poll found that some women even admitted to throwing a wobbler after their man popped the question because they wanted a better ring.

In fact, ten per cent of all couples admitted they had crossed words during the ring buying process.

One in twenty of the girls polled said they thought a man should spend more than one month's salary on an engagement ring and a third said that was about the right amount.

A humble 58 per cent said they thought a month's salary was too much to fork out on a ring.

Only a generous six per cent of men said they didn't think that would be enough to buy the ring of their girlfriend's dreams.

While 88 per cent of men were in agreement that women could be demanding when it comes to the type of engagement ring they want.

13 per cent went as far to say that a girl had been ungrateful when they had presented her with an engagement ring.

Couples shouldn't focus too much on the cost of an engagement ring but it's important you choose a style that suits you and your own taste and that will stand the test of time.
