Woman charged with spousal rape

The 40-year-old has been charged with the rape of her husband - the first time a wife has been charged with marital rape in the country.

A South Korean woman has been accused of locking her husband inside their home for 29 hours and forcing him to have sex.

It was only in May 2013 that South Korea's Supreme Court recognised spousal rape as a crime.

The Seoul Central Prosecutors' Office allege the wife locked her husband inside their house and forced him to have sex with her.

They allege the woman did this so she could obtain favourable evidence to use in divorce proceedings, Yonhap News Agency reports.

In 2013, marital rape was recognised as a crime for the first time.

The Supreme Court upheld a lower court's verdict to jail a man who forced his wife to have sex while threatening her with a weapon.

Earlier this year, a court acquitted the first woman in South Korea to be charged with attempted rape.

The 45-year-old admitted drugging her ex-boyfriend, tying him up and hitting him with a hammer, but said she did not plan to rape him.
