Man set ablaze for stealing pot of soup in Calabar

A young man who stole a pot of soup in Calabar has been set ablaze.

Pot of soup

For allegedly stealing a pot of soup, a young man has been sent to the great beyond by an angry mob which butchered him, before setting him on fire.

The gory incident of jungle justice, according to reports, took place on Sunday, August 23, in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, when the man was nabbed around Goldie Street in the city, while two of his accomplices managed to escape the certain death.

It was learnt that the unfortunate man and his gang had attacked a woman who resides at the Mayne Avenue Extension area in Calabar South and robbed her of her freshly prepared pot of soup that she was warming for her family’s breakfast, before going  for early morning mass at nearby St. Bernard’s Catholic Church.

The apparently hungry men stormed the woman's home and stole the pot of soup from the fire and were sneaking out of the compound when the woman sighted them and raised  an alarm which attracted her neighbours.

The three men were given a chase and the man carrying the soup pot was the unlucky one to be caught by the crowd who reportedly dealt with him severely, butchering him with machetes before setting him ablaze.

One man who witness the ugly scene said:

“It was almost dawn when the boys attacked the woman and carried away her pot of soup. When they were about getting out of the compound, she raised alarm and people came out, pursued and caught one of them.

The man they caught could not run very fast because of the pot of soup he was carrying and refused to drop it.

This is not the first time they have come to our compound to steal. Last week, they removed the car battery of one of our neighbours; once night falls, they attack people, especially ladies, around Goldie by Atu and snatch their handbags and phones.”
