This video shows why you should never ignore a 'homeless' child

You’re walking down a busy city street. You see a young boy eating out of a rubbish bin. He looks dirty, tired, hungry and miserable. What would you do?

This video shows why you should never ignore a 'homeless' child

A young homeless boy with tattered cloth was seen rummaging through a rubbish bin for food as dozens of people ignored him.

Nobody paid attention to him or ask him why he was checking the dustbin for food, some even went as far as putting waste in the bin right in front of him.

It is only right at the end of the clip that a couple of teenage girls come and ask the boy if he needs help.

They can be heard saying: "Are you alright? Are you sure you're okay? Where's your parents?' Do you want any money?" the teenagers asked.

The video then ends with the slogan: ‘Do you care enough to be a cop?’

Although the child was an actor, the people who walked past the boy rummaging though bins in Newmarket, Auckland, were not.

According to New Zealand Police, the video was part of a recruiting campaign which asks the public whether they ‘care enough to be a policeman’.

NZ Police deputy chief executive of public affairs Karen Jones said: "We are looking for people who care about the people in their communities. People who will step in when they see someone who needs helps or is doing something that is unsafe"

Ms Jones said a core police value was empathy and the ability to see people in distress and help them.
