Lydia Achieng had showed up at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA), informed the pastor and church members that the groom, Charles Manoa, was married to her.
Angry church members had reportedly gotten hold of the woman who was carrying an eight-month-old baby boy, beating her while she was still giving evidence, Kenyan Newspaper Standard Digital reports.
Achieng told the church that her baby's father was the Manoa and they had a child previously who died during their two-yr relationship.
The pastors immediately separated themselves from the wedding, claiming that the groom and bride, Caro had hired the church hall for the wedding.
“Even if the wedding proceeds, he remains my husband and the father of my children. He left us about a year ago and I only got wind of the wedding ceremony recently and lodged my complaint with the authorities,” Achieng told reporters.
When the matter started getting out of hand, police officers had intervened and arrested the groom. The bride was reportedly left standing there.
The woman said her estranged husband is a Ugandan national who escaped into Kenya to hide, adding that he is an illegal immigrant.
“This person in the first place is a wanted man in Uganda. The area chief and Federation of Women Lawyers (Fida) and I should be heard,” she said.
