President-Elect is TIME Person of the Year

Donald Trump has been named as TIME Person of the Year for the first time ever after a shocking presidential win.

The announcement was made today, Wednesday, December 7, 2016. "To be on the cover of Time as Person of the Year is a tremendous honor,” Donald Trump told Matt Lauer on NBC’s Today show today morning.

Every American president has been named TIME Person of the Year. President Obama landed the cover twice in 2008 and 2012 when he won his first and second term elections. George Bush was also named TIME Person of the Year twice, 2000 and 2004.

According to the BBC, Donald Trump said "It's a great honour, it means a lot" about his TIME Person of The Year cover.

This year's TIME Person of The Year runner-up was the Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

"Hillary Clinton made history for three decades as an advocate, a First Lady, a Senator, and a Secretary of State, but she will now be remembered as much for what she didn’t do as what she did" wrote TIME about her.

"A female candidate in an election that didn’t hinge on gender, after all, she became a symbol in a fight that was about much more than symbolism. She’s the woman who was almost President, she is what might have been and what will yet be."

The New York City mayor, Bill de Blasio has asked the United States government to pay $35m for Donald Trump’s security costs.

The city had earlier complained on the high cost of providing security for Trump, who has an apartment at Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue.
