20-yr-old man faces signature forgery, N5,000 theft charge

The accused stole the cheque book of then complainant, Abdulahi Ayinla, and forged his signature on one of the cheque leaflets to withdraw N5,000 from his account.

Taofeek, who resides in Agege area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and forgery at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 17 at an Agege Wema Bank branch  on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Egunjobi said the accused stole the cheque book of the complainant, Abdulahi Ayinla, and forged his signature on one of the cheque leaflets to withdraw N5,000 from his account.

“Taofeek presented the cheque to the teller at the bank, who discovered that Ayinla’s signature was forged.

“He was immediately arrested him and handed him over to the police,’’ he said.

The offences contravened Sections 363 and 404 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 404 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osibanjo, granted him bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until June 6 for mention.
