In celebration of a phenomenal woman

Not many men are blessed with wives who are there to stay, and are willing to work hard to help them achieve a lifetime dream; a dream they can part-own. Not many women stay the course in the face of opposition, defeat and contention.

Luckily for us as Ghanaians no one really cares if you fake it or not; if your hairdresser does not tell the next random Jane who comes to braid her hair, your mechanic will dig a hole and whisper the torrid details of the stench in your bedroom so he can be free.

So you know the love and appreciation shown was real when the President shouted it out to the world, how amazing His Rebecca had been on their long journey to victory. He did not struggle to point to her as the rock-solid ever-present support that had been there throughout for him. He did not mince his words or hide them in the maze of tentative jargons. There was his Rebecca; beautiful, imposing, grand and yet resourceful. There was the woman who gave him hope to win.

Not many men are blessed with wives who are there to stay, and are willing to work hard to help them achieve a lifetime dream; a dream they can part-own. Not many women stay the course in the face of opposition, defeat and contention. The typical African woman’s show of care is a nicely worded cajoling night time conversation of how it is ok to throw in the towel; how you do not need all these to leave a lasting legacy.

However, this extraordinary woman, a wife and a mother, had a different attitude; she was neither going to accept a near victory nor sit back and watch the labour of many years fall to the ground prematurely. To her, if giving in was an option, it would have been the first choice. If that option was not on the table in the beginning, then it was not to be at any point in time. So whenever Nana came home bruised, battered and discouraged, she poured in the oil and the wine, bound him up, put the balm of soothing words and an encouraging perspective of why victory was possible as long as there was a man to fight and sent him out again to go and Win.

It’s been a long bumpy road trip, but she has proved herself to be a capable, reliable and a loyal co-pilot. Her nature is not to live life through the lens of the public, choosing to rather let her work announce her. Her word has been her bond, valuing the premium placed on a promise delivered than the plethora of empty words.

We live in a time where we do not have time; successful women walk out in numbers because their husbands could not achieve their dreams at the first attempt. Women from solid backgrounds would rather pride themselves with their upbringing and become another battle their husbands would have to fight rather than joining forces with their husbands to fight for a common interest. Yet Rebecca, our Dear Rebecca, William’s eternal Darling, proved that the greatest love a woman can show her man is to love him be it in the valley or on the mountaintop, in bliss or in gloom, in the places of drought and in the places of abundance.

Her passion for children and the family makes her the most qualified person to sit where she sits as the mother of the nation; helping our leader pull this country together, give it a new vision and help it heal from the blighting divisive politics it has witnessed.

So on this day, As we celebrate all remarkable women, Let Primarily celebrate Mama Rebecca, Our Mother, our Queen, our Manager of the Home Affairs. But for you, maybe…just maybe Nana would have given in….And how sad it would have been.
