2 headmasters sacked, 9 interdicted for extortion

Two headmasters have been relieved of their posts after allegedly charging unapproved fees following the start of the government’s free Senior High School policy.

Nine others were interdicted, the Director General of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku Amankwaah announced at a press conference Thursday.

They were sanctioned following investigations into allegations of extortion against 19 school heads.

Some parents had earlier complained about what they described as extortion by heads of schools even though the free senior high school (SHS) education policy has begun.

They argued that some head teachers were demanding registration fees and other items which even cost more than what government has absorbed under the programme.

The parents subsequently called on the Education Ministry to intervene.
