My release has created a vacuum in Nsawam prison

The first runner-up in the first edition of 'Stars of the Future' competition, William Ramzy Amui, who was the choir leader while in prison says the prison officers and officials miss him.

In an exclusive interview with Pulse.com.gh, Ramzy said he found solace in music while in jail. He explained that this made him very instrumental in the choir of the inmates.

“The major reason [I got stronger] was music and God.”

“I was the choir leader in the prison. I’m the lead vocalist, I teach music. Now that I’m no more there, there is a big vacuum. There is a big space that cannot be filled.”

He noted that apart from his fellow inmates and choir that miss him; he knows the prison officers will also wish to hear him sing with the Nsawam prison choir again.

“Even the officers say it all the time. Even the day I had to leave, the OIC said he was sad I am leaving.”

He added that he has some ideas to help the choir in the prison grow and sing better than they do now.

“I have plans for them. I just need to organise myself very well and help them.”

Ramzy was sentenced to 10-years imprison with hard labour by the Tema High court for his role in robbing a complainant of her 4×4 Toyota Highlander, with registration number GT 6409X and an amount of GH¢300 at gunpoint.

The court found him and 7 of his accomplices guilty of charges of conspiracy, armed robbery and dishonesty under Article 29, Clause 146 of the criminal code.

In the prison, he led a choir to sing and thrill dignitaries who visited.

He performed a song he had specially composed thanking former President Mahama for remembering those in the prisons.

After the performance of the song by Ramzy and the choir, President Mahama applauded and remarked: “I am really touched by your song. That was good.”

Ramzy went on to audition for the M-Net West Africa Idol contest in 2007 in Nigeria. He returned home after qualifying for the next stage of the competition but his dream of being a music idol was dashed when he was arrested and put on trial in February 2007, just days before he was scheduled to go back to Nigeria.
