Film producers to demonstrate today

The Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) is set to stage a demonstration to register their displeasure about the current energy crisis facing the country.

According to the association, the current power cuts has affected their business since movie production is dependent on electricity.

Spokesperson, Michael Kweku Ola has indicated that the demonstration dubbed, “Esum Aduru Yen” [darkness has befallen us], is expected to attract stakeholders of the creative arts industry. He explained that the demonstration should have been staged in April but they decided to hold on with it upon hearing that the government was importing power badges that would arrive in April, to help reduce the energy crisis. However, they realised the government again failed to deliver on its promise, hence the demonstration.

It is expected to start at the Cultural Centre in Kumasi at 3pm and end at 7pm at the Jubilee Park.

Earlier, FIPAG released a statement alleging that, “some people in government have gone the extra mile to push their agenda through some respected leaders and executives of FIPAG and other stake holding associations of the industry to call members to alienate themselves from the demo and discredit it…”

They called on all members to, “remain resolute and not be swayed by the threats and lies that are being promulgated around.”

Former president of the Ghana Actors Guild (GAG), Samuel Nii Odoi Mensah, who was mentioned in the statement denied sabotaging the protest.

He stated in an interview with Abrantepa on Radio Univers that, “I have not stopped anybody from going on a demonstration. I said to them that the demonstration should take a different form whereby we will write to the government, and present a petition to the regional minister, copy minister of information or culture minister. And what I suggested should be in the petition is that, although we understand it is a national problem, they should reduce taxes on solar panels and generators and also reduce the price of fuel so that people can buy one of these things for use until they are able to fix the problem”.
