People have different ways of attracting public attention to themselves for one reason or the other. In the case of celebrities, rumours [of which some may be true] and thoughts of people disseminated through media platforms are ways by which they earn much publicity in the music space.

As the saying goes, “there is nothing like bad publicity” [often associated with Phineas T. Barnum, the 19th century American showman and circus owner] as one can thrive on it and ‘shine’. There are instances where there have been publicity stunts from some celebrities just to remain relevant in the industry. And since “bad news sells”, arts and entertainment websites and even those known for general news capitalise on that for traffic.

While the strategy by some musicians usually has been to deliberately make controversial remarks or delve into matters that would attract public sentiments prior to releasing their tracks, others also get falsely accused on equally controversial issues. Nonetheless these controversies usually turn out to be a catalyst to promote their songs.

Either ways, Pulse.com.gh presents to you five (5) celebrities who enjoy bad publicity.

Black Entertainment Television (BET) award winner, Sarkodie is one musician who has come under criticisms over what some describe as ‘poor’ relationship with the media. Some have argued that the artiste has refused to avail himself to the media for interviews. However, during his media tour prior his Mary album launch, Sarkodie revealed on Pluzz FM that he is mostly quiet over controversies about him because it boosts his career. According to him, the controversy will end if he talks about it.

"…You look at the positive side. If they are actually talking about it, you need to calm down and chill. If they don’t talk about it then it means you have a problem. Whether good or bad I just sit down and enjoy it. At least you trend and that can be an opportunity to gain one fan and I wouldn’t miss that because when I come in and talk it might kill everything… but then people that love you are the ones that worry so those are the people that I worry about but not the case that comes up. I think most of the people are worried at home asking ‘oh why are they doing this to Sarkodie?’ I’m actually ok but I think about the people because it is hard for them especially with the family members and fans,” he noted.

Rapper, Guru, who has been in the news on countless occasions for allegedly stealing songs from underground artistes has said that he keeps mute and enjoys all the bad news rather than getting angry because he wants to be discussed on radio and television. According to him, people do not pay attention to good news anymore.

“It’s good. You only get people attack you because you are doing well. They will attack you because you are the only one to be attacked. I don’t see nothing wrong with the publicity and the bad side because people mostly want to hear bad stuffs and they encourage bad publicity. I love it because it is really helping me a lot. Giving me the best of opportunity to be discussed on radio, TV. Massa, I want to be discussed. As the same way you don’t want to discuss the good things but for the bad ones you will talk about it because you want to hear which you don’t have a proof… I love it the way it is,” he told Joy News.

There were rumours that sound engineer, Killbeatz who is more or less, an in-house producer for R2bees had stopped working with the music duo. According to Paedae, a member of the group, they laughed out loud when they heard the news.

“It is pretty normal for people to report bad about you so when they are talking negative about us, we still keep mute. There is a saying that no news is good news so we just keep our mouths closed. We love it when we see all those news on twitter. We were in London when I saw one story that Killbeatz has left R2bees, I showed it to Mugeez and we laughed about it,” he said on YFM.

She was scolded by Deputy Minister for Culture, Tourism and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie for revealing that she exposes her boobs to be in the news. Some call her the queen of Bikini. Yes! Nikki Samonas is her name. The actress who wore a dress that showed her cleavage during the 2014 4Syte Music Video Awards stated on Peace FM that she did so to give Ghanaians something to talk about.

“You should do something to always feel relevant in the industry and that is what I did,” she said.

The actress in an interview on Radio Univers also said that she is not concerned about what people say about her.

“People talk. Let them talk because they make me a star,” Nikki Samonas said.

Dancehall artiste, Shatta Wale after being in the news often for bad reasons earned money through them. Shatta in November 2014 received GHC 16,000 from MiPromo as money generated from his YouTube videos.

“It’s real… just made 16,000ghc online courtesy MIPROMO. You too can…at least those bad news about shattawale turned into money...lol..?#?moneygangster?“ he tweeted after receiving the money.

Shatta Wale gained grounds in the music industry after releasing ‘venom’ on Charter House [organisers off the annual Ghana Music Awards] for ‘denying’ him an award. Dancehall artiste, Kaakie had her own share of the spleen but was later apologised to. Fast forward, he took off his clothes, leaving his singlet and boxer shots while performing at the 2015 Ghana Meets Naija – an act that got people talking after the show.

It is worth pointing out that these celebrities are not always in the news for the ‘wrong’ reasons. Most of them including those not mentioned here have shown love to the needy as part of their corporate social responsibility. But like I mentioned earlier, little or no news is made of them because they do not cause traffic. Remember bad news sells fast.
