“Being beautiful is a liability” - Charlotte Osei

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Charlotte Osei says women are faced with many life issues and they are also burdened with their physical appearance.

“The problem is that, as a woman, if you are beautiful, it is a liability. If you are ugly too, it is a liability”, she said on Joy FM.

As part of the International women’s day, some women making changes in Ghana and across Africa namely Charlotte Osei (EC Chair), Joyce Aryee (Former, CEO, Gh Chamber of Mines), Mona Quartey (Former. Dep. Finance Minister) and Ama Sarpong Bawuah (Snr. Director, Government Relations, Newmont Africa) took over the Joy Morning show to talk about early child marriage among other women related issues.

The program was hosted by the Second lady of Ghana, H.E Samira Bawumia.

The 48-year-old revealed that “we need to support our sisters to make them empowered...we can show some concern and be the change that we want to see. Get involved, talk to the woman who sells roasted plantain...by opening our hearts to care a little, things will change".

As the First woman to be appointed the EC Chair of Ghana, Charlotte Kesson-Smith Osei urged her fellow educated women in the country to be role models to empower girls who have come out of early marriage.

“We need to start engaging the people who are serving us every day. We need to get engaged in their own lives,” she charged women.
