Former president of the Ghana Actors Guild (GAG), Samuel Nii Odoi Mensah has denied sabotaging an intended demonstration by the Film Producers Association of Ghana (FIPAG) against the recent power cuts in the country.

Nii Odoi Mensah was, in a statement signed by Public Relations Officer and Welfare officer of FIPAG Michael Kwaku Ola, accused of trying to persuade stakeholders to alienate themselves from the “Esum Aduru Yen” [darkness has befallen us] demonstration, slated for May 28, 2015.Although Mr. Ola has said the statement leaked and as such, was not the official one, Nii Odoi Mensah says he only expressed his views on how best to deal with the situation instead of going on a demonstration which may not yield any results.

“I think that people have primitive minds and so when you voice your opinion, they take it as you sabotaging them. I have not stopped anybody from going on a demonstration. I said to them that the demonstration should take a different form whereby we will write to the government, and present a petition to the regional minister, copy minister of information or culture minister. And what I suggested should be in the petition is that, although we understand it is a national problem, they should reduce taxes on solar panels and generators and also reduce the price of fuel so that people can buy one of these things for use until they are able to fix the problem”, he noted on Radio Univers’ Brunch2Lunch.

When show host, Abrantepa inquired if he called some members of FIPAG and asked them not to join the demonstrators, Nii Odoi Mensah said he never called any member.

“I called leaders of FIPAG; I didn’t call members. I called Ola himself. I called the general secretary who even said it was a good idea and that they were thinking in the same line. I called other executives. Where did I go wrong? he wondered”.
