Ghanaian actress, Ama K. Abebrese, has expressed utmost excitement over the decision by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) to ban cosmetic products containing skin bleaching ingredient, hydroquinone.

Speaking to Starr FM’s Kafui Dey, the bubbly actress said the ban is long overdue. According to her, the side effects of skin bleaching cannot be over-emphasized, a reason for which she embarked on an anti-skin bleaching campaign.

She expressed excitement that her anti skin-bleaching campaign has yielded results and commended the FDA for the decision.

“This is such an exciting news for me. This is something that is long overdue, but I think it’s a step in the right direction. Kudos to the FDA,” she said.

Ama K. Abebrese urged FDA to put measures in place in order to ensure that the products, when banned, will not be smuggled into the country.

“My only worry is how the banning will be effective. I hope they put some sanctions in place because it does cause a lot of danger,” the actress stated.

She advised that Ghanaians be proud of their skin colour than yearning to be white.

“A lot of young ladies think if they don’t have a light skin, then they are not worthy… That’s wrong. It became an acceptable norm but I said, ‘no’. It was time to appreciate our differences and not go to this extreme especially knowing the dangers that it comes with,” the actress said.

Showbiz personalities Paulina Oduro, Nana Ama McBrown, and Hammamat Montia have all been part of her campaign.
