The suspects are 10 in number: 8 men, 2 women, and have confessed to the act, according to the statement.

A statement signed and issued in Accra by Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, Deputy Director, Public Affairs, said the suspects are operators of “rogue websites who peddled fake questions presenting them as leaked papers and also in authentic papers which had been compromised after their official release from the Council’s depots.”

In addition, the statement assured Ghanaians and the government of Ghana that it is committed to conducting credible examinations and will stop at nothing in achieving that goal.

Background

During this year's WASSCE exams, three papers -- Oral English, Integrated Science and Social Studies papers -- leaked.

Some students in some schools in the Greater Accra and the Eastern regions had access to the examination papers between 12 midnight and 4 a.m. on the day the papers were written.

Some students created WhatsApp groups to circulate the leaked exams papers.

The council, last year, cancelled five subject papers in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) — papers 2 of English Language, Religious and Moral Education, Integrated Science, Mathematics and Social Studies. This followed realisation that those papers had been leaked, raising issues with credibility of the examinations.

Outmoded concept

Vice President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, Angel Carbonu questioned the integrity of WAEC over the leakage of the papers.

Mr. Carbonu attributed the leakage of exam papers in the country to the broad geographical space within which the exams are conducted.

“Is it necessary for us to join a WASSCE community and be writing the same examinations? That concept ought to be discarded because it is absolutely an outmoded concept,” he stated.
