University councils to be reconstituted

Albert Seth Nyonyo said the university councils will be reconstituted

A member of the Council of State, Mr Francis Albert Seth Nyonyo, has given an assurance that the government will soon reconstitute university councils.

He said the council will operate independently without any external interference.

According to him, the autonomy of the university and its freedom to make academic policies are enshrined in the Acts that established the various universities.

Mr Nyonyo gave the assurance when he met with the executive members of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

He said "Very soon, the university councils will be reconstituted. ‘Very soon’ means very soon; we will not delay you."

He added that members of the University Council are qualified with how to manage the system and it will be improper for government institutions outside the council to give directions on how the Council should operate.

The National President of UTAG, Dr Harry Agbanu on his part said the absence of governing councils in the institutions was causing severe administrative impediments to the smooth running and direction of the technical universities in the country.
