Teachers to lay down tools over unpaid arrears

Government had earlier agreed with NAGRAT to pay the outstanding salary arrears, car maintenance allowances and transfer grants by June 13, 2015.

But, speaking to Pulse.com.gh, the President of the Coalition for Concerned Teachers, Ernest Opoku said government has failed to meet the deadline of payment, hence their decision to lay down their tools.

"Some of the teachers have been teaching for two three years; I mean it is quite heartening. You are employed by the government of Ghana for three years; you are being paid for only three months and the rest of the arrears is still lingering on," he said.

"And so, if we are in February, and the affected teachers have still not received their money, then we have no option than to declare strike," he added.

He however debunked assertions that teachers are riding on the back of upcoming examination by senior high schools to demand for immediate payment through a strike.

"We don't take delight in embarking on strike. But we think that we have done part of our bargaining. So as a country if you want to move forward the human resource base of the country, it is based on education," the President of the Coalition for Concerned Teachers added.
