Dr Carlos Arrow, dean of the school of nursing, told Pulse News the screening was essential because of the social responsibility the school has to the community.

“We wanted to have this exercise because we have a social responsibility as an institution to promote health within our community. We want to show the community that we are here to help and support them so if in the future if the community needs some education, they know that this is the place to come.”

Male attendees were educated about self testicular examination which was important in order to detect any abnormalities while women were educated about breast cancer and how they can on their own spot the diseases early warning signs.

There was also a counselling unit set up to listen and advice patron on an array of issues including eating habits, the importance of exercise and rest.

Patrons who spoke to Pulse News, expressed gratitude to the university for organising the health screening and promised to support the institution in future community endeavours. The university has in the past also offer IT and sign language classes to young people in the community.
