The National Service Secretariat has announced an increment in monthly allowances.
According to a memo, signed on December 14, 2016 by the Chief Director of the Ministry of Finance, and cited by Pulse.com.gh, the new monthly allowance is 559.04 cedis.
This is a 209 cedi increase (representing a 40 percent rise) in the monthly allowances which until now was etched at 350 cedis and takes effect January 1, 2017.

There have been calls from service personnel for an increment in order to help personnel cope with current economic conditions.
National service is mandatory for one year all graduates of tertiary institutions in the country. Unlike countries such as Israel, service is not limited to the army, but in all public and private organisations.

While this will be met with excitement from current and prospective service personnel its is expected to raffle some feathers within the transition team because the incoming administration has expressed concerns about major decisions being taken by the outgoing government (which lost the general elections earlier this month) in what it deems at the eleventh hour.

The country is saddled with debt and the new administration would have to look for funding for the increment that has been announced.
In 2014, a corruption scandal engulfed the National Service Secretariat, leading to the dismissal of many of staff members who were implicated.
