Whatsapp fuelling indiscipline among students - GES boss

“I will not buy the gadget [phone] for my child until he or she completes the secondary school. All they do now is Whatsapping and Whatsapping deep into the night instead of studying," the GES boss said.

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned the increasing rate at which parents continue to buy mobile phones for their children who are yet to complete Senior High school.

According to him, the trend is contributing to indiscipline among students, as such students gain unlimited access to the internet.

Addressing the 10th Conference of Heads and Managers of Ahmadiyya Muslim Education Institutions in Ghana (CHAMEIG) held in Wa in the Upper West Region, the GES boss said the situation is worrying.

There is still a raging debate over whether or not mobile phone usage should be banned among senior high school students.

Students and parents are divided on the issue, with the Ghana Education Service (GES) insisting that all SHS students be banned from carrying mobile phones to school or using them there.
